Gingrich Pulls Ahead of Romney in Republican Primary

Follow me on:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is heading into his second week with frontrunner status in the 2012 Republican primary, according to RealClearPolitics.

The "Contract with America" author leads former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., 23.8 percent to 21.3 percent, a gain of 1.2 points since Gingrich moved into the lead.

In addition to making greater strides in the polls, campaign officials told The New York Times Gingrich has gained traction in building his war chest, up $3 million since October.

The Union Leader, of Manchester, N.H., endorsed Gingrich Sunday for the state's first-in-the-nation primary on Jan. 10, 2012.

Romney leads, however, in the New Hampshire primary polls by double-digits, holding steady at 36.2 percent compared to Gingrich, who surged to 19.6 percent from 6 percent only a month ago, according to RCP.

Rounding out the RCP averages through Nov. 20 include:

  • Herman Cain, 15.5 percent
  • Gov. Rick Perry, 8.0 percent
  • Rep. Ron Paul, 8.0 percent
  • Rep. Michele Bachmann, 4.8 percent
  • Former Sen. Rick Santorum, 2.3 percent
  • Former Gov. Jon Huntsman, 2.3 percent
