An Oil Change We Can Believe In

From Justin Quinn, About.com Guide   December 21, 2009

A sign outside Horizon Auto Center advertises free Nobel Prizes with every oil change

An auto mechanic in Rockwall, Texas, apparently as bewildered as many Americans by President Barack Obama's highly questionable award from the Nobel Prize Committee in October 2009, has decided to cash in on the honor himself: by handing out free Nobel Peace Prizes with every oil change.

The "prizes" are really stickers which read, "Conferred for the effort and peaceful intention of getting the oil and filter changed."

Ken Sterling, who owns Horizon Auto Center at 5335 Horizon Dr., began the promotion on Nov. 20, and since then, he's gained quite a bit of attention.

"We're trying to figure out where all this [attention] came from," one Rockwall resident told me. "It's been great for the town."

Although Rockwall is a politically conservative county, Sterling claims the promotion wasn't intended to be political. Still, he says, the next one will poke fun at the government's wanton spending problem by advertising, "We sell brakes. Washington needs them."

Now that is a change we can believe in!
