Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal

From Justin Quinn, About.com

On Aug. 29, 2008, Republican nominee John McCain chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running-mate.

Upside: As an Indian-American, Jindal would provide the Republican ticket with some much-needed diversity without sacrificing any conservative values. As a first-term governor, Jindal’s leadership style has drawn comparisons with Newt Gingrich, which has resonated well with the GOP’s conservative base. As a complement to McCain, his youth (he’s 37) would provide an excellent balance to the age issues that have dogged the Arizona Senator throughout the campaign.

Downside: Louisiana isn’t a swing state and McCain doesn’t need Jindal’s help to deliver it. Although an up-and-comer in the Republican political scene, his inexperience could haunt the campaign if McCain tries to capitalize on his own experience. While the diversity Jindal would bring to the campaign would be welcome, it is unlikely that it would translate into the kind of crossover and independent votes the Republicans need to win the fall election.
