Upside: Romney’s presence on the presidential ticket would go far to shore up the deep divisions within the Republican Party created during the primary battle with McCain. Romney is a well-liked former governor who has shown a shrewd acumen for business and politics. His popularity with conservatives would legitimize McCain’s fractured relationship with them and provide a unified front heading into the Republican National Convention. As a prodigious fund-raiser, Romney could help motivate Republicans nationwide. He also could help deliver swing states that he won during the primary campaign.
Downside: Although they now reportedly get along, their public feud during the campaign did little was filled with tension and disdain. The two men would have to work hard to convince the electorate that their squabbles are behind them. McCain and Romney also have vastly different styles and disagree on key issues, which could spell trouble heading into the general election. As a conservative, Romney won’t be much help converting crossover Democrats or independents. His history of switching positions on major issues will provide a generous target for the opposition.
GOOD PICK? YES
