Is Giuliani Fixated On Florida?

Monday January 14, 2008
Rudy Giuliani and his wife, Judith, visits Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 18, 2007

Forget Iowa. Forget New Hampshire. Forget Michigan, too. Apparently former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani believes Florida is the only state that counts.

When the Iowa caucuses rolled around, Giuliani was in Florida. While the other GOP candidates tried to take New Hampshire, Giuliani was trying to take Florida.

On the day before the Michigan primary, where was Giuliani?

You guessed it: Florida.

As this story at CNN.com shows, Giuliani can't stop talking about Florida, either. One has to wonder if Giuliani is campaigning ... or on vacation.

Someone not from Florida should check Giuliani's campaign to see just how many Floridians are giving him advice. The day before the Michigan primary, Giuliani has three front-page story links about his increasingly intimate courtship with Florida on his website, as well as a home-page link to a whole page devoted exclusively to the Florida's primary. As of Jan. 14, 2008, the last time Michigan was even mentioned on Giuliani's site was Nov. 21st.

Trouble is, according to these polls gathered by RealClearPolitics.com, Giuliani is still trailing Arizona Sen. John McCain by a point and a half, and we're just two weeks away from Florida's caucuses. Meanwhile, Michigan is slipping away -- just like Iowa and just like New Hampshire.

Let's not downplay the importance of Florida to the overall campaign. Florida's voter concentration is huge when it comes to the November general election. It also makes a nice parting statement when it comes to the presidential primaries heading into Super Tuesday. Usually, however, the winning candidate has nailed down at least one of the other states and uses Florida as the hammer to nail shut the proverbial coffins of the other campaigns.

Maybe I'm missing something. Perhaps Giuliani has some complex top-secret blueprint for success that involves Florida and no other state, but somehow I don't think so. Whatever his plan, it hasn't gone well so far. He lost Iowa. He lost New Hampshire, and one day before Michigan's primary, it appeared as though he'd lose that state, too.

Where did Giuliani's momentum go? Just three months ago, Giuliani was the shoo-in candidate. That was 2007, I guess. In 2008, he is so focused on winning Florida, it seems as though he can't remember how important it is to win other states, as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, Winghunter, but I think I’m doing fine. Certainly, my friends at the White House and in the NRCC think so. Incidentally, this blog post was written way ahead of subsequent ones from other commentators who also wound up questioning Giuliani’s obsession with Florida. And it actually proving prophetic, as well, since Florida is what doomed him to defeat (a victory for conservatives, I might add). Once again I appreciate your suggestions regarding my course of study. Your comments have been filed.
