What's Sick About Sicko
Thursday November 15, 2007

I had a chance to watch Michael Moore’s Sicko last night, and from a conservative perspective, there is much to like -- and much to question.
Moore takes his usual shots at the president, including one scene listing all the recipients of the health care industry’s campaign contributions, but he also takes some shots at presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton for the same reasons. No political group is safe in this movie, which is sure to be a refreshing change for conservatives.
The movie promotes universal health care -- a liberal idea by conservative standards, and Moore blames former President Richard Nixon for the current health care crisis in America. Not surprising, but irritating nonetheless, considering I know something many don't -- not even Mr. Moore, apparently.
About five years ago, I interviewed former presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. The former Massachusetts Governor confided in me that he is a major proponent of universal health care -- not really a revelation, considering the Democrat's well-known liberal bent. He blew me away, though, when he said he supports a universal health care plan drafted by Nixon years before he became president.
So I am left to wonder about Michael Moore’s movie. He may not be wrong about Nixon's propagation of the current health care system, but Moore certainly failed to disclose the whole story. It makes me wonder if other parts of his movie may suffer from the same lack of disclosure.
I do recommend conservatives rent Sicko, if only to see how the other side views the health care debate.
