Why Not a National Sales Tax?

By February 7, 2013

Follow me on:

When it comes to taxes, conservatives are loaded with creative (and fairer) alternatives to the current income tax system. Let's face it, the current income tax system is loaded with fraud and with people who "forget" to pay taxes and report income (see: half of executive cabinet appointees the last 5 years). Honestly, the tax code is so ridiculous that there are probably plenty of honest mistakes. And those are probably made by people trying to do the right thing and wind up paying more than they should.

And why not eliminate some of the cronyism that goes along with the current tax system? One alternative is a national sales tax that would eliminate the current tax code including income taxes, corporate taxes, and social security taxes. It would also broaden the taxpaying base and would capture tax dollars from those who illegally avoid paying income taxes today.

The Value Added Tax you are suggesting is perhaps the only way to raise the revenue the national government needs to fund it’s entitlements, it’s debts, and it’s necessary expenditures. This is because it taps into the huge underground economy, the illegal drug trade especially but also any illegal economic activity, by taxing most consumer spending. Unfortunately it is such a great revenue producer that it’s application will only encourage even more outrageous government expenditures when a curb on government spending is more than ever absolutely essential.

Why not a national sales tax?……because it would just be another tax added to our already too high income tax. do you really think they would give up collecting income tax???

What would stop the big spenders in Washington from giving us both a sale and income tax like we have here in NJ? A Constitutional Amendment? Would never pass and even if it did they would find a way around it. Look what they are doing to the Second Amendment.

I don’t favor a national sales tax; a user tax. but I think the states need to invoke a higher sales tax to decentralize funding by federal government..The federal government uses subsidies to states as an extortion, force the states to use federal policies.. I, as a conservative believe the federal government is too powerful and centralized..
Another issue is that the wage board scale in most nortern states and California incomes are higher..This is exampled in the income per diem of each state. Therefore, the state with the higher per diem incomes are financincing states with lower per diem incomes..

Would not be a bad idea excetp the clowns in Washington would only add a sales or Fair tax on top of an income tax like we have here in NJ.
