Specter Awakens a Sleeping Tiger -- and Her Name is Katy Abram

Update No. 3 (Aug. 13, 3:47 p.m.):The fury of the Left is in full-force now, attacking Katy Abram with a shocking indecency.
This morning, she spoke with Glenn Beck and described the vicious attacks, breaking down in tears more than once as she did (you can hear a portion of the show here. Beck said he understood her feelings, that he has a security detail following him for similar reasons.
The people perpetrating this harassment can't even be called "liberal." I know many liberals, and can say with absolute certainty that most of them are good people. I consider more than a few of them my friends. But what these people are doing, whoever -- whatever -- they are, is downright vile. They're calling her on her cell phone and accusing her of being a racist, as if that has anything to do with opposing health care. They're sending her hate e-mails. These scurrilous cowards are even calling her father at his office and harrassing him there.
Simply read the comments at the bottom of this thread to get a feel for the kind of the vitriol being leveled at this stay-at-home mom from a small town in Pennsylvania -- a woman who simply spoke up against what she saw as an oppressive government proposal and asked her Senator to do something about it.
I spoke with Katy just a little while ago. She's doing surprisingly well considering all the cheap shots she's taken. She said she feels as though speaking out is what she is meant to do right now. She's not sure where her journey will lead, but she knows she cannot stop.
That got me thinking.
During one of his many civil rights marches, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was hit with a brick and knocked down.
At that moment, it would have been easy for him to stay down. He could have called for help or been taken to the hospital. It would have been easy for him to pack it all in at that moment and call it quits.
But Dr. King knew he couldn't quit.
Dr. King got up, and Dr. King kept marching. Why? Because he knew he was marching for a cause greater than himself.
The left can knock Katy down all they want. They can criticize her and harass her and even call her names. But Katy is going to get right back up and keep going.
Update No. 2 (Aug. 12, 5:46 p.m.): Katy appeared on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" just a few minutes ago. Matthews must have been off, because Katy was interviewed by second-stringer Lawrence O'Donnell, who kept saying Social Security and Medicare were examples of "good socialism." As Katy would begin to answer his loaded questions, O'Donnell would interrupt her, then put words in her mouth. "So! You think these programs should be repealed, right?!" She'd say, "Well, I ..." and he'd say, "So you do!" What a ridiculous "interview." Katy did a great job, though, considering she was on a very hostile network.
I found O'Donnell disingenuous and patronizing. He thanked her for being there, acknowledged she doesn't speak publicly for a living, then grilled her with oxymoronic questions that had nothing to do with health care. He also tried to elicit highly personal information from her from her, including her family's income. I would have given anything to hear Katy ask him what he makes every year.
But, then, Katy's too classy for that.
Finally, for all his pretentious "knowledge" (he knew that Social Security was adopted from a German model, for example), O'Donnell swore up and down that Obama had never advocated for a single-payer health care system. Oh, really?

Update No. 1 (Aug. 11, 11:34 p.m.) Katy appeared on FOX News' "Hannity" tonight as the headline story. She was, as she has always been, wonderfully articulate and passionate. It was a great interview. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you take a look.
Original Post: Before today, the last time I talked to Katy Weber was 19 years ago.
She sat behind me in chemistry class. She was a junior and I was a senior and we both attended Hempfield High School.
Then, today, as I was working on a piece about immigration reform, I looked up ... and saw her again. At first I thought I was imagining things. Perhaps I'd had too much rum on Monday night. After all, I told myself, "It's been 19 years. No way that was Katy."
But the image wouldn't go away. There she was, right in front of me -- on CNN no less, confronting Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter at a town hall meeting in Lebanon, Pa.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve talked to Katy via Facebook, the way people do nowadays. She “friended” me or I “friended” her, I don’t know which. We were both delighted to learn that despite the different roads we’ve traveled in life, we both came around to conservatism as a personal political philosophy. She would occasionally comment about something I wrote. I would occasionally comment about one of her family pictures.
But, until this morning, I had no reason to actually speak to her, voice-to-voice, about something as substantive as health care reform.
Nor was I alone. After her confrontation with Specter, everybody wanted to talk to Katy. CNN, The Washington Post, CBS, FOX New and every person or three-letter TV station she has known since the eighth grade, as well as many people -- and other TV stations -- she didn’t know.
Katy’s popularity came about because she had the courage to tell Specter this:
"I am a Republican," Katy said. "But first and foremost I am a conservative. I don't think this is just about health care. It's not about TARP. It's not about left and right. This is about the systematic dismantling of this country. I'm only 35, I've never been interested in politics. You have awakened the sleeping giant. We are tired of this. This is why everybody in this room is so ticked off."
Her words have reinvigorated conservatives across the country and she has virtually single-handedly renewed a grass-roots movement that President Obama and Congressional Democrats were trying to dismiss as “manufactured dissent.”

Well, if there were any doubt in my mind before this morning, it is gone now. I know Katy. There’s no way in HELL she was being paid to speak her mind. Katie and I were friends. Good friends. Such good friends, in fact, that when I asked her for an interview all these years later, she happily obliged. I spoke to her as she was headed to Philadelphia, where she'll speak via video feed to FOX News’ “Hannity” tonight and to CNN’s “American Morning” and FOX News’ “FOX & Friends” in the morning. For the record, they're staying with friends in the Philadelphia area -- liberal friends.
"I have lots of friends, and we have sat and talked about all this B.S.," she said. "We've talked and complained, but we've never done anything about it.
Until recently, Katy hasn’t been that involved in politics. In April, she attended her first ever political event – a tea party in Harrisburg. Since then, she’s spent a lot of time researching government and getting up to speed on important issues like Obama’s health care legislation. She has read the bill, and for the past two days she's become informed. She's come to the same conclusions I have.
"The stuff that's in there, Justin, it is crazy," she said. "When they're talking about EFT fund transfers and them being able to get into our accounts, that sounds like something from another world. That doesn't sound like something that should be happening in our country."
So, when she had the chance to ask Sen. Arlen Specter a question, she didn’t want to miss it.
"I was delighted that I had the opportunity to speak my mind," she told me. "We got there at quarter of seven. We were among the first handful of people [to arrive].”
Katy said she was worried at first.
“I didn't know if they were going to bus in [members of the Service Employees International Union],” she said, referring to recent incidents in which union thugs had attacked opponents of the health care bill. “I didn't know what was going to happen. At some of these town hall meetings, I've heard about them busing in people and bringing them in through the back door."
As she was standing in line, she noticed a group of women who were demonstrating in favor the bill. She approached the nearest one.
“I asked her, 'Why are you for this health care bill?'” Katy said. “And she told me, 'I work for the Philadelphia unemployment office. There are people there that can't afford health care insurance.'"
As Katy looked at the other women, they were all wearing the same outfits.
"Did they bus these people in?" she remembered thinking. "I'm concerned that we paid for them to come here today."
She raises a valid question. After all ... it's a Tuesday – a work day. The only reason Katy and her husband could attend was because they were on vacation celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary.
“I went in with a list of 10 questions and I didn't use any of them,” she said. “When I sat there as Arlen was doing his little spiel, I changed my question four times.”
Just before her turn (she was questioner No. 7 of 30), there was a confrontation between Specter and a constituent, which drew the attention of the armed guards in attendance as well as a throng of media (in most YouTube clips, Katy can be seen behind this fray, holding her own camera up to capture the scene).
"I had already been anxious," she said. "I had been thinking about this since we got the invitation ... a couple of weeks ago. So, after things got heated in there, then it was my turn. I was obviously a little bit ramped up. At that point, I just went with whatever my heart told me to say."

What is barely audible, however, is what Katy said after Specter took the microphone back.
"I said to him, 'George Washington is rolling over in his grave right now,'" she said. "And he looked me dead in the eye, as if to say, 'I get it.' Whether or not that sinks in, I don't know. I know, after what I said, that he heard me. I know he heard me. I was pretty emotional about it, and I'm not an emotional person. I had tears in my eyes, and I know he saw that."
She still doesn't understand why so many members of the media are interested in talking to her. I tried to explain that she has articulated how conservatives genuinely feel about this legislation -- that she IS the sleeping giant. She still seems confused. Despite the attacks from the liberal media that have already begun, Katy continues to inspire people.
"Justin, all these media people just swarmed around me,” she said. “I was not expecting that at all," she said. "There were 30 people who asked questions [at the town hall]. Why am I the one people have been calling all day long?"
As she prepares to speak to the national media tonight and tomorrow, I asked her how she feels about being thrust into the national spotlight.
"I am so nervous, I want to vomit in my shoe,” she said. “I'm not a public speaker. I'm not an in-front-of-the camera type of person. I think that is why my head is just spinning today. I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around it.”
Katy Weber Abram is not a part of some vast right-wing conspiracy to give insurance companies the upper hand in the health care reform debate. She’s just an ordinary woman from an ordinary town in Central Pennsylvania, a woman who is concerned about the welfare of her family.

Judging by the idiocy of her comments, it’s perfectly clear that she’d never before been interested in politics because it likely exceeded and escaped her intellectual capacity.
How is reforming the health care system going against the Constitution?
How is wanting to lower the costs of health care premiums transforming the United States into the Soviet Union?
How is wanting to enact a public option to compete with private insurance companies going against what the country’s “founding fathers” envisioned?
Bet Paper Tiger Katy has no answers to those questions. And the worst part of her sorry diatribe is that the other lemmings at the meeting stood and applauded her ignorance, such as the lunatic who asked Specter if he’d ever read the Qur’an and the other nut who warned Specter that God would one day judge him on how he might vote on health care legislation.

Some of us have been awake politically a very long time. I’m only 42. She was asleep the past 8 years is unforgivable. Two wars, lies told to the UN, money laundering was going on in Congress. Wall Street meltdowns since 2000, investors losing life savings. She likely has less opinion about that than whatever “waking sleeping giant” means.
She talked to Specter simply because he’s a Democrat now and no longer Republican, that is her impulse. When there, she made no sense.
Thank Heaven for Katy Abram. I would not care if she had slapped Specter’s pompous face [was that his face]? First there was illegal alien amnesty; some 80% of us didn’t want it yet they tried to cram it down out throats, anyway, and that was under MY president. Now they have a whole menu which if passed will solidify the votes of the unproductive to Dimocrats forever. I’m from Appalachia and there are 10s of thousands of advanced welding, nursing, mechanic, and whatever other certificates sitting on the porch, trained under various government programs; and before you start, there are many more whites than blacks in that area. Some of those people are on the 3rd and 4th generation on the public dole, just as they are in the 9th Ward of New Orleans where I was stationed for over 3 years. The “Great Society” brought training, but none of the poverty whores EVER said, “We’ll offer the training, but there just might not be an entity that brings the job over to your house. You just might have to go where the job is.” Why do you think that is? It’s to capture the freeloader vote for the foreseeable future for the those who run for the poverty vote, mostly Dimocrats. So I don’t want the managers of the “Great Society,” “War on Drugs,” “War on Poverty,” Social Security, the education system, and all the other spiffy failed government programs running anything for me including my health care, killing my currency, taxing everything I consume through the global warming hoax, and the rest of it. The people who like this healthcare plan are: illegals, the unemployed, and people who haven’t worked to earn their own way. According to the Bill of Rights, we have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We don’t have the right to healthcare. THE GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IS TO PROTECT OUR LIBERTIES AND RIGHTS!! The government needs to stay out of our choices, our lives, and our pursuits! I have never been without healthcare coverage because I have always had a JOB. If a person is not willing to work, then they should face the consequences! The government should spend less time on socialist programs and spend more time on expanding liberty, opening up trade, improving the playing field for businesses, and lessening restrictions on business so more people could find JOBS which would intern PROVIDE HEALTHCARE!
I think Katy is a genuinely concerned citizen, but what bothers me is all the misinformation that is being circulated by the insurance lobbyists and the right-wing media that is trickling down into talking points that ordinary citizens are using. Using electric fund transfer payments (EFT’s) from people’s accounts is exactly what insurance companies do when they accept automatic payments, so why would that be so weird if a government option plan did the same thing? There needs to be more education and a more cohesive plan, and that’s going to be tough to get past the distractions the right wing and big insurance are brainwashing people with.
I don’t understand why we should praise falsehood. I believe in democracy and letting everyone’s voice be heard, but there is nothing in the bill about letting the government access everyone’s bank account electronically, and there is nothing in the bill that remotely involves turning the US into a Soviet-style system. That’s not opinion, that’s just plain false.
I used to think I was conservative, but that was before the conservatives abandoned the truth and joined up with conspiracy theory types.
Way to go Katy!! It is this kind of sentiment that is going to get us where we finally need to go in this country: the final abolition of all socialist institutions. After we get rid of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, we have got to dismantle schools, police, fire departments, highways, and the postal service. Actually, we would need to get rid of the military, too, because that’s a socialist institution as well, and, of course, Veterans Affairs. There is no reason all of these can’t be fee-for-service institutions. I personally can’t think of anything more terrifying than the government making sure people had health care.

Now, why in the world would you go spreading lies like this. I can only guess that you haven’t actually read the bill. I’ve read most of it (admittedly, I’m still reading it — it’s 1,100 pages long). Not very far into the bill, I found a section that outlines governmental powers, which included gaining real-time access to patient bank accounts for patients who participate in the public option. It’s THERE. It’s not make believe. I found it myself, I didn’t read it on any other web sites or blogs. That’s when I wrote about it.

I thought the same thing at first. Then it dawned on me. The difference between what insurance companies (and other automatic payees) do and what the government is planning to do with its public option is that the insurance companies must have the patient’s permission to make the payments. There is NO WORDING about authorizations or permissions from the patients before funds are transferred. We all know that if it is not explicitly stated in the legislation, unscrupulous folks will exploit the loopholes. The wording is done this way to ensure that payees get paid. In other words, if you’re one day late with your payment, the government will make the transfer for you.
This is another performance by an uneducated, bigmouth, rambling idiot. Nothing less than a lunatic attempt at 15 miinutes of fame.
I wasn’t going to approve this comment because at first I thought it added nothing to the discussion. Then I realized — it says more about the person making the statement than it does about the person he or she is attacking. Once again, the left doesn’t like the message, so it attacks the messenger.
The Preamble of our Constitution makes promotion of the General Welfare one of its primary purposes. That’s the basis of the Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and unemployment compensation laws. The General Welfare is important enough that the Constitution mentions it a second time in the section on CONGRESS’S power to tax.
People uninsured and without access to health care are often hard to deliver health care to. If we don’t get them covered, it allows bioterrorism or just pandemics to be much more severe than if they are covered.

Give me a break. According to About.com’s US Government Info Guide Robert Longley, “Everyone in the U.S. – including those illegally in the U.S. — is guaranteed access to basic health care. Under a 1968 federal law, all patients seeking care in hospital emergency rooms must be given a minimum level of treatment, regardless of their ability to pay or health insurance status.”
The fact is, Americans DO enjoy a basic level of health care in the US, and that basic level is a thousand times better than the basic level in other countries. This isn’t about promotion of the General Welfare. This is about nationalizing the General Welfare. There are more instances of conflict with the constitution with this bill than there are instances of harmony. You don’t honestly believe that bioterrorism and pandemics are just going to dissolve because Americans adopt ObamaCare, do you?

Or 37th in the world and 20th in infant mortality, depending on your calculations. Last year, we spent about $2.5T on health care, or about 1 dollar out of every 5 in Gross Domestic Product. Half of the bankruptcies in America and half of the home foreclosures were due to medical bills. A majority of bankruptcies and foreclosures happened to people who had insurance. We may all have access to health care, as you claim. We just can’t afford it.
Health care needs reform. However, I’m not seeing it in this bill. At best, this is a very weak start. Nothing about cost control.
I understand Katy’s point, however inarticulate. We are less free than we were 19 years ago, when you and Katy were in high school. Many of us don’t understand what is happening to this country. We understand the health care debate even less. Many do not care to understand. Inarticulate angst trumps logical discussion every time. For that reason, health care reform will die. Perhaps, as Charles Krauthammer has suggested, something will pass with that label but it will be little more than the status quo ante.
What did Katy say? And Katy who? Until now I still did not get it. The woman has no clue what she is talking about. She is no better than Sarah Palin. Brainless!

If you read the constitution it does say: “provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,”. I noticed you missed the CLEAR distinction when our forefathers placed the word “provide” with respect to “Common defense” and the word “promote” with respect to “general welfare”. When it comes to “the right to healthcare”, a constitutionally prudent person would claim that the founders believed that to “provide” for welfare would be to provide for more destitution and would NOT lead to “our collective prosperity”… Otherwise they would have placed the word “provide” in where, you are currently misled to believe, it already exists.
Katy went to a town hall meeting with a question. I can understand her worry. Then we decided to make her a celebrity. And when I say we I mean newspeople, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, you know the usuals. No one should be yelling at her for her comments, but no one should be applauding her for her comments either. She was just there with a question. America dedided to make her a rockstar. I watched her performance on CNN this morning and it left me wondering. Wondering if her “health care savings account” that her self employed husband and her used was for full blown health care or just for accidents? If they actually paid it to an insurance group or if the just saved in case they need money? If her children were covered by a state medical plan, like so many states are using now? If her children attended, or will be attending a public school? What kind of work does her husband do? Does he apply for grants for doing this work? How many people, if any, does her husband employ? Does he provide health care benefits for these people? If he doesn’t, does he give them an allowance so they can purchase their own? Do they pay into the Social Security System? During the election people turned mean and ugly. I do not mean to sound mean or ugly and if I do, I would like to say I am sorry in advance. But you can’t live in this country (or any other country) without the government. When our founding fathers wrote the constitution they couldn’t have mentioned health care because there wasn’t any to mention. Using that as a reason for the government to not adopt a health care bill is the same thought process as many Amish and Menonite communities use. I am not bashing them, but everyone who is commenting here is not part of these communities and has decided that progress should prevail.
Poor people deserve to have health care. Yes, you can go to the Emergency Room and get a minimum amount of care regardless of your ability to pay, but wouldn’t it be better to give someone antibotics for an upper respiratory infection instead of hospitilizing them for pneumonia. The people who do not have health care are not just the people who have decided to let the government take care of them, they are young, innocent children.
The laws of economics tell us that with more competition comes lower prices. With a government plan it will give big insurance companies competition, lower the prices for everyone, and give people who are not covered the ability to get coverage.

A health insurance plan with a $5000 deductible is not a bad plan. IF you save money and don’t have tons of debt. Those people who do not save and who do like Obama, spend, spend, spend, and have loads of debt, they are the idiots. I have an emergency savings plan with $10,000 in there. My car is paid off, I do not have credit card debt, and I do not spend wastefully (unlike Obama and our govt officials). A $5000 deductible is not outrageous for me. I pay for my own health insurance plan, and while it is not as good as the former plan I had from my former employer, I do not want a government plan. No way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with Katy and her comments. I agree with the others who’ve expressed their fears and anger at these meetings and on the internet. There’s a lot of reason to be concerned and fearful. Obama couldn’t even run Cash for Clunkers. They blew threw all that money in days. If they can’t even handle something like that, how on earth will they handle a massive government health insurance plan? It will most definitely be like Canada with long waits for doctors, rationed care, poor quality of care. There is no way around it. We do not have enough doctors for this plan. We do not have enough money for it. We already have a HUGE growing deficit. For me, I am making darn sure that I have a personal doctor. If this thing passes, I would advise everyone to make sure they have a doctor. Otherwise, you try to get one, and you might have to literally wait for years because the waiting list will be very long. There will also be doctors who leave the profession if this monster passes. I have already read things by some who’ve said they’d leave. They will be forced to comply with govt mandates- possbily forced to perform abortions and or not give needed care to the elderly– they would rather leave than be forced to do something that goes against their values and purpose for their work. I don’t blame them. This health care plan is a monstrosity and a horrible, horrible thing.

Despite Ms Abrams passion, In the end I feel her fear of disrupting the status quo ultimately and unwittingly serves the interest of the insurance companies. Those of us that favor health care reform are more concerned with the health of the general public and the costs of our presently failing system. I promise everyone reading this, the insurance companies will find plenty of ways to make money no matter what the bill looks like when it comes out of congress.
I think it is ignorant to believe that the only people without insurance are are illegal immigrants and the unemployed. There are other people in this country who work just as hard as everyone else who either don’t have the benefit of an employer who provides health care or have an insurance plan that does not meet their needs. Deductibles and co-pays are often as back-breaking as having no coverage at all.
I also think that too many people hear the word “socialized” and automatically jump to the “dismantling of the US constitution”. Like it or not, there are certain public institutions that are socialized and can not and/or should not be run any other way. Imagine if our fire departments or police departments were not socialized. The right to personal safety is not written into the constitution either, but no one seems to have a problem with these institutions.
I like to think that I’m open-minded enough to hear both sides of the story before forming my opinion, in fact, I prefer to know exactly what I’m arguing for or against, but I have yet to hear anyone come out with a valid argument against socialized healthcare. So I invite any of you out there, not to start screaming profanities and yelling about what a socialist idiot you think the democrats are, but to actually rise to the challenge and tell me exactly why socialized healthcare is damaging to this country. And please, don’t spout off something you heard on Bill O’Reilly, because I have no respect for those who like to argue for the sake of arguing. Back yourself up with facts. Thank you.

I watched that segment with Katy, and O’Donnell was asking questions as if in a normal conversation. He didn’t interrupt her but repeated his questions because she didn’t appear to understand them and/or didn’t know what to say. He was at no time patronizing. With the reform, she also didn’t realize if she chose to keep her insurance with a $500 deductible and pay all medical expenses out-of-pocket every year (since her family doesn’t meet the deductible), she can continue to keep it.

The state of this country sickens me. I spent 26 years in the Navy, put my life on the line, and defended my country proudly, but now I feel as if I’ve wasted my life. While I do feel O’Donnell was a bit hard on her, I found that she was clueless. In fact, she stated what a difficult time she was having with medical care issues, but she basically wanted to suffer through it. What if she were to have something more serious that would bankrupt her family? Medical costs are too high to have them shared among people unfortunately. She also seemed fake when she said that–like she had to say that in good grace. She seemed like someone who was upset by something, but she did not really understand what upset her, so she took an issue she did not really understand at all.

She wasn’t talking about 9/11 when she said that, DR. She was referring to politics in general. I spoke with her after the O’Donnell interview and she told me that, like most Americans, she was horrified by 9/11 and very concerned about the wars. She wasn’t politically ACTIVE though until recently. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t interested in politics. If O’Donnell hadn’t kept interrupting her, perhaps she could have explained herself further, but of course TV newspeople have to cut off their guests to make their political points.
As for William F. Buckley Jr., I believe he would be energized by what’s going on in America today. I think he’d be excited to see how many people are willing to become engaged politically even if (as it is in this case) at great personal risk to their own peace of mind.

I found it interesting how Katy admitted to Lawrence O’Donnell that she had no idea how much taxes she paid because she lets her husband take care of that. She has to sign the forms. That means she signs legal documents without knowing what’s on them. Yet another thing that Katy can’t be bothered to know about or understand. Her feminine reticence will not help her during the audit if her husband is pulling shenanigans with their money. I would love to see an interviewer ask her what she thinks about the subprime mortgage problem because I’m sure she’ll answer like a typical conservative: Those people should have known better than to get into those mortgages! I’m sure she’ll say something like that.
I’d like to point out that Katy’s comment that she “didn’t care” about 9/11 is being taken out of context. She was generally discussing politics and events, and made a general comment that back 7 or 8 years ago, she just didn’t care about getting involved or paying attention to politics. She did not refer specifically to 9/11 or the wars. She did, however, downplay the wars by saying (laughably she didn’t think much of them because we were seemingly always at war or involved in conflict. She is another American with no clue about policies or positions, but when he as-unintelligent and hateful friends and family take a position, she must follow, even though she has not a clue about which she speaks. BUT – she did NOT say she didn’t care about 9/11, and to accuse he of doing so costs credibility when the fact that she is clueless is pointed out.
I really don’t care for people attacking this woman because of her opinions (misinformed as they are). She does have a right to speak her mind.

The reason Katy has been thrown into the public spotlight is because of her catchy phrase. When she was able to ask her question and then responded, “you’ve awakened a sleeping tiger.” That is the reason her name is mentioned in every entry. It is not because someone hates her. There are many people who have said the same type of thing, but the news media decided when Katy spoke she said something that the average person could relate to. I don’t hate Katy. I think that she is very misinformed, but millions of people are. She is not only misinformed about health care, but according to the interview last night she is misinformed or maybe not informed about alot of things. (Her income; cheaper insurance; wars; 9/11; Social Security; medicare/medicad; you know things) I would encourage everyone who realizes the importance of having health care for every American to find someone like Katy and help that person. Yes, you can go to the emergency room for care. Yes, they have to care for you even if you are not able to pay. This is important, even if you do not have insurance, even if you can not pay they will still bill you and then contact a collection agency. Your credit will still be ruined, and it will still be your bill. I don’t believe the government is proposing a bill in which health care is totally free. You can still keep your insurance if you are happy with it, but if you are not or if you do not have insurance you can purchase insurance through the government. It will cost you something. I have heard that if your income is low that vouchers are possible to help you pay the cost. No one is saying that everyone is getting free insurance and then you must do what the government tells you to do because they own you now. The worse 4 letter word I can think of at this time is FEAR. If the Republican party can make you feel fearful then they have won. The only thing to fear is fear itself. When you arm yourself with truth and knowledge then and only then will you be truly free.
I have seen many of the townhall meetings taking place, via youtube videos. So many people are so outrages. Katy was just one of them. It honestly makes me more proud to be an American than I have felt in a long time. Obama’s election was so depressing and sad because so many people voted for him for the wrong reasons- they voted for him simply because he was black or cool or black & cool. Because he promised them umpteen things (many of them still believe these promises), he used these catchy chant phrases (”yes, we can”), he played on people’s fears (he’s still doing that), and so many other reasons that had nothing to do with his leadership abilities and his policies, both of which STINK! So, it is good to now see people finally getting angry and speaking up rather than just being passive as this nation gets more and more destroyed by liberals. I hope this is just the beginning of conservatives speaking out against this runaway liberalism. Katy, and all the others who’ve spoken out at townhall meetings (in the face of politicians who don’t even listen anyways) make me proud to be an AMERICAN.

Ramona, Actually, the problem is that many of us have become INFORMED, not misinformed. Have you actually read the bill? Are you seriously okay with the things in it? I mean, you do realize don’t you, that if it passes and we have this healthcare, that you will have very long waits to see doctors, your care will not be as high quality, and eventually, this plan will wipe out private insurances. The bill even says that if you have a private insurance and it changes in ANY minor way, you HAVE to get the govt. plan. That, to me, is sickening… this is one of the reason conservatives are likening it to Nazism. The govt. is FORCING us towards this plan. And you are right, the govt. plan will not be “free” because our TAXES will be paying for it. And since it is going to cost BILLIONS, and since we are already TRILLIONS in debt, I think it’s safe to say that our taxes are definitely going to rise. And no, fear is not the only thing to fear. Ignorance should also be feared, and your comments sound as if you are very ignorant of many of the FACTS of this bill. Go read it. Read it in its entirety. Go do some research about Canada’s health care. As the host of hardball correctly pointed out, there are some social based programs that do provide valued benefits…i.e. Medicare and social security. The main concern should be the fiscal solvency of these programs. I do think there needs to be a healthcare debate that includes coverage for uninsured children under the age of 18, a clause in all health insurance that ensures coverage with a preexisting condition and across the board tort reform measure.

I believe the issue here is not that Katy Abram stated her opinion. The key issue is how she arrived at that opinion.
For many folks, 9-11 was significant enough to make those not interested in politics begin to be so, and grow their ideas organically, being open minded by listening to multiple news sources (no one outlet- Fox, CNN, MSNBC, The National Review, or The Nation is completely neutral–so no one outlet should be trusted completely without further checking of facts, and thoughtfully weighing each situation to get a big picture from which to arrive at an opinion).
Other folks are drawn to one source of news input and begin to identify with a “cult of personality” of an individual host — Glenn Beck (and his 9-12 group, which K.A. is a member of, in spite of the fact she represented herself as not being connected to a group of this kind- I suppose she was untruthful on that point in the Hardball interview as, once again, this admission would have not served her point), or Rush Limbaugh. Beck and Limbaugh are judged on job performance by ratings. In a quest to get ratings each shoots for being able to say the most outlandish things as it has been shown the method works. These gentlemen have essentially taken a page from Howard Stern’s career playbook, and applied it to their individual outlets corporate leanings (Fox or Clear Channel). It’s just the radio/TV business, after all. (if you even know that URL, you know who you are). Scripted action does not equal individual thought.
As Americans (Patriot seems to have been another co-opted term to create devision) on both sides of an issue we must get used to questioning our sources, and checking our facts before we speak. There is nothing wrong with ResistNet as one source, but we need to have a check and balance on that by using something like FactCheck.org. Then and only then can we have a respectful interchange.

I found this piece after doing a google search for Katy Abram after seeing her Hardball interview. I wanted to see how on earth anyone could defend her performance. I guess being divorced from reality helps. She’s “articulate” and “informed”? Really? Any competent high school student should be able to discuss not only New Deal programs like Social Security, but also the Supreme Court’s initial responses to them. Someone who’s college educated should be able to discuss not only Great Society programs like Medicaid and Medicare, but also Nixon and Reagan’s responses to them. It’s a little strange to invoke the Founding Fathers while remaining blissfully ignorant of the events in the two centuries following them.
I have pity for anyone who would look so deer in the headlights discussing these issues, but we all get in over our heads pretty easily. Part of becoming an adult involves recognizing the limits of your abilities, and this process can be difficult at the tender age of 35. Of course we can see flaws in others more easily than in ourselves, but apparently even an award-winning journalist can think she did “a great job.” To say she can serve as an “inspiration” is an analysis reserved for the thoroughly confused.

I have prayed for national healthcare all my adult life, as I have seen what its like for people with no insurance and people who have been trapped in dead end jobs because of insurance.
I also believe that the close to anarchic performances at the town hall meetings has secretly been sponsored by the insurance company and of course, their paid for slave, the GOP.
What I do NOT like about the bill is what I consider the dishonest way that it has been presented and the emphasis on denial of care to seniors and the severely disabled. Pres. Obama talks about all the waste with Medicare Advantage, but has routinely failed to mention that Medicare Advantage is, in 29 states, often the ONLY way disabled recipients of Medicare can close some of the huge coverage gaps in Medicare. There is nothing in federal law that requires an insurer to sell a Medigap policy to a Medicare recipient under 65 (ie the severely disabled). That is dishonest – and any final bill should simply require any insurer to cover anyone who applies, with rate caps and some form of subsidy to a private insurer for a high risk insured. That would cost the government a minimal amount of money compared to the public option.
Before deregulation, telephone service was closely monitored by Public Utility Commissions, and it worked very well. If we tightly regulate the insurance companies and expand Medicaid for those who cannot pay a premium, we would achieve the goal of universal high quality coverage at a fraction of the expense being considered now.

Many of those who jumped on the “hope and change” band wagon had no idea what this dictator planned to do to our country, because he pretended to be something he wasn’t. And to the person who blamed Bush for spending the social security money. You need to check your history. The program was started by a democrat to allow people to set aside part of their own money for their retirement and was to be kept in a seperate fund and not taxed when it was paid back out since it had already been taxed. Then, democrats are the ones who got social security moved into general funds cause they felt there was too much money in the fund (perhaps if they had left it alone, the baby boomers would also get social security), and then, our good bud Clinton decided to tax people’s social security and the last president to rape the social security system was Carter who gave aliens who lived in our country social security retirement even though they had never paid into the system and none of the money belonged to them (it belonged to the people who trusted the government to be good stewards of their retirement savings). The democrats, although not generous with their own money, spend every dime they can steal from the American people in a manner which shows no regard for how hard people have to work to earn it, so they can give it to folks who didn’t earn the money.

So despite the image that she cultivates, that she is (as described by one of her conservative pals who was at the PA rally) a “stay at home mom,” she’s not. Katy lies. Hmmm, a past major in communications, attractive TV presence (apart from the waterworks!). She got caught lying just like Joe the Plumber.

Thanks for your constructive criticism, but you should know that the topic I cover is US Conservative Politics & perspectives. The blog is the perspective part and constitutes my opinion, which I’m entitled — and, in fact, encouraged — to have.
I have to admit that I’m relatively impressed (and equally frightened) at the stalker-like research you’ve conducted on my friend Katy, but I’m sure you know, as well as I do, that how people appear on paper is rarely what they’re truly like in person. I think the “lies” you and your fellow liberals are ascribing to her are manifestations of your own, which somehow erroneously validate your own initial skepticism of her, skepticism you formed when you first heard what she had to say. I, personally, see neither hypocrisy nor inconsistency in her comments vs. her online personal proclivities. She, herself, said that she had never been involved in politics before, and that is true. Say whatever you like about her involvement in local meet-ups with like-minded folks. Those groups are simply places for discussion. In her case, these conversations ultimately and patriotically turned themselves into action, which is the genesis of change.

P.S. These rude comments on here make me laugh. All liberals know how to do is insult. There is no intelligent rebuttal or debate with liberals, esp. not right now when they simply can’t deny certain things- such as the astronomical cost of the health care proposal and the fact that we are already hugely in debt. These issues affect essentially all Americans and are fundamental to the nature of the relationship between the individual and the state. Yet pure and simple, Katy had no idea what O’Donnell was talking about when he brought these programs up.

They knew they would never be able to take us over but they could erode us from within. Read the book”School of darkness” by Bella Dodd, who spent years in the communist party in the usa till she saw the light and wrote this book in the 1950’s. this issue with HEALTH CARE is one of many – this country will continue to have major conflicts and differences amoung its citizens if ONE very important thing doesn’t happen. Most of us know what that is CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM!!! Everyone should be demanding it NOW! There will be no true change in this country until we can have honest people – not career politians running the show. Every liberal, conservative, libetarian or moderate should know this unless they’re just biased or brain dead.

I just saw the clip from the town hall in which Barney Frank addressed a question very similar to Katy’s. That was awesome. I feel really fortunate to have a representative who gave such an honest, forthright and thoroughly deserving response to such ignorance and irrationality.

Regarding the Lawrence O’Donnell interview; tough questions do not equal “loaded” questions, as Justin Quinn implies. That’s why the show is called “Hardball”. If she wanted another nerf ball interview (the kind that Quinn applauds), she could have just done another with Sean Hannity. O’Donnell did give her plenty of time to talk, like when she described the marvels of her $5,000 deductible private insurance plan (ooohhh, sign me up!). Her discussion there sounded more like an ad AGAINST private health care. Many of O’Donnell’s questions dealt with Abrams’ Town Hall statements, like “restor(ing) this country back to what our founders created according to the constitution”. It was THAT STATEMENT by Abrams that had nothing to do with healthcare! And O’Donnell’s question about her family income was based on Abrams’ “they (Obama admin.) want her family to pay more taxes” comment. Abrams could have declined to comment on what they make, but instead sounded either totally ignorant or disingenuous in saying that she didn’t know. Finally, Abrams insists “there are programs in place that the founders did not want to have here”. Would pre-emptive war be one of them? Oh, I’m sorry, war is “commonplace”, you gotta have faith in the government when it comes to pre-emptive war.
The Democrats are acting just plain desperate. They should be. This is all about them and their agenda. And Obama and his agenda. And Americans, even the ones who voted for Obama, are waking up and realizing it. As our nation heads deeper into debt and yet Obama and the Democrats still are pushing for this costly health reform bill, when there really is not a health care “crisis” (except the one they’ve made up) only proves that this is just Obama and the Dems. trying to leave their permanent mark on our nation. Facts are facts. Frank won reelection with approximately 70% of the vote. A lot of people liked him in November, and a lot of people like him now, both locally and nationally. In fact, if you do a google search for “Barney Frank approval ratings”, you’ll quickly turn up an article from an award winning Philadelphia reporter who has high praise for Frank’s town hall performance.
I understand that approval ratings of Congressional Democrats are dropping. Two things: First, do you have any numbers for Barney Frank specifically? Keep in mind that it’s not at all uncommon for people to disapprove of Congress, yet give high marks to their own representatives. And Barney Frank will always be especially well liked here. You made a remarkable claim, and I’d be impressed if you could back it up.
Secondly, Democratic approval ratings may be dropping, but are they “DISMAL” or “in the tank”? They’re at 49% last I saw. Meanwhile Republicans are at 40%. Would that qualify as the “gutter” by your system of nomenclature?
As for what kind of representative I like, I’ll just say you’re making a lot of unwarranted assumptions. Let’s stick to the facts. Can you back up your claims on approval ratings?

As for you naysayers, grow up. This healthcare debacle is about Obama’s ego and lust for power. It has NOTHING to do with providing affordable healthcare to all Americans. It’s about taking over 1/6th of the national economy. If Obama was serious about providing affordable healthcare to all, he would start by weeding out the waste and inefficiencies in the current system. The obvious place to start is medical Tort Reform. Then follow that with medical Tax Reform. And while he’s at it, he’d start looking into how to fix the current government programs that are about to be insolvent, namely Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Without fixing those three, it’s a total joke!! How can he expect anyone to buy the argument that the government can effectively run the biggest and most expensive program in the history of this country? Lastly, if he’s truly serious on healthcare reform, he’d work on allowing healthcare and insurance to go across state lines. Open markets create true competition!!
Obama wasn’t satisfied with taking over GM and Chrysler. He wasn’t satisfied with taking over Citigroup. It looks like he won’t be satisfied even once healthcare is under government control, because as of today, he’s going after our national security, too. With the appointment of a special interrogation unit under the auspices of the National Security Council which answers directly to the White House, he will begin investigating and prosecuting officers of the CIA for possible abuses. Will that unit investigate and prosecute those that nailed the mastermind of 9/11? You bet!!! Because you know, We the People have to “apologize” because we “forced” that terrorist to do it!! By the way, wasn’t it just a couple of months ago, that the American people and Congress said NO to these investigations/prosecutions? Why yes it was! But, Obama doesn’t care about us, doesn’t care about Congress, doesn’t care about anything, except his own agenda. And does he think that the American people aren’t getting it that this is a distraction to the current task at hand, the government takeover of the healthcare system…which as I said before, is 1/6th of the entire economy of the United States?
Oh…and of course, we can’t forget the ticking time bomb of Cap and Trade. If that passes, he’ll have total control of this country’s energy, too. There’s not much more to control after that!

Amazing that in 7 short months, Obama and the federal government managed to gain control of the banking, mortgage, and auto industries. I’m still astonished at the amazing speed of that takeover…without a shot being fired. Then the “administration” (and again, I use that term lightly) kicked CEO’s out of select companies and replaced them with government appointed executives…AND determined their compensation! Not scared yet? Aren’t you even having a touch of queasiness about the appointment of a whole bunch of “czars” that are only accountable to the President, and are appointed without congressional approval, and who have a massive amount of power over many policy decisions within the United States? These are policy decisions that under 10th Amendment of the Constitution belong to the states, not the federal government. We the voters did not put these czars there, and frankly, we have no power to remove them. You still want to close your eyes and imagine nothing is wrong? WAKE UP.
This push for “universal healthcare” has everything to do with the takeover of a big portion of our national economy. This proposed program, according to the 10th Amendment of our Constitution, is not even LEGAL! This program would be the largest in US history, and would give the federal government sweeping powers over the most basic of ALL our citizens’ needs…access to doctors and healthcare.
Aren’t you even a bit concerned that this man is now emasculating a government agency (CIA) that operates separately from the control of the White House? Doesn’t it even bother you just a bit that via Attorney General Eric Holder, an interrogation unit was formed under the National Security Council (which reports directly to the President) to investigate and prosecute present and former officers within the CIA? No, it’s not about investigating and prosecuting wrongdoing. It’s about emasculating and diminishing. It’s about breaking down our security. And it’s all politically motivated.
Then, let’s talk about Cap and Trade, yet another debacle looming on the horizon, and meant to have sweeping federal government control over yet another of our citizens’ basic needs…access to affordable energy. Are you ready to pay $4,$6 or even more per gallon for gas…immediately? You may not be able to afford to have your roof replaced, should your home suffer the misfortune of a damaging hailstorm. Let me tell you, the cost for roofing materials has doubled in the past year alone. I know, because my business has to deal with this issue every day. The cost for roofing materials will skyrocket because they are made with petroleum products. Anything made with plastic or rubber will skyrocket too, since they are made with petroleum products. Are you ready to pay double the current amount in order to heat your home? And what if you can’t pay? Well, you’ll either decide not to heat your home any longer, or take a handout from the federal government, for which you will pay in a BIG way.
I could go on and on. The man in the White House knows a thing or two about the Constitution, since he taught Constitutional Law, (even though his Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said otherwise in April of this year, which is just more smoke and mirrors, but I digress.) Obama knows EXACTLY what it takes to undermine the Constitution, because he taught Constitutional Law. We the People need to stand up as a nation and say, NO MORE!! Ronald Reagan said it best, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

That seems to be all they can do is criticize and disrespect people. Liberals seem to think that being highly educated (brainwashed in most cases) makes a person more qualified to speak. I have a college degree but it is not in peace, love and blah, blah, blah or some scholarly program where they teach you to avoid talking about facts, but instead to attack people who speak the simple truth. This country was founded on simple truths but somewhere along the lines we became more concerned with political correctness and finger pointing. Now we have these “scholars” and politicians who are very adept at over-thinking and clouding the issues and then selling thier way of thinking to the youth and sheltered people of this country. Somewhere along the way the liberal media jumped on board. How can we wipe out the liberal disease? Someone please tell me! To all conservatives; ignore the liberal propaganda and personal attacks. Keep the faith and continue speaking out against government takeover. Fight for our constitution and everything we love in this country. To all liberals; Move to China.

Don’t pay any attention to those juvenile, hateful Obama sicophants who are currently slandering you. So nobody here is for Medicare for Grandma. And since she needs that hip replacement that’s going to cost $60,000, it’s okay for her to sell her house to pay for it. Or, she can suffer in pain for the rest of her life and sit in a wheelchair, but you, her children, firmly deny that she should use Medicare, because “That’s socialism!” And of course, you’re against Social Security, having never drawn a social security check after you retired, and never will–you’d starve on the street first. It’s great to know that since the USA is the ONLY industrialized nation not to have universal health care (To hell with all those poor people who need medical treatments. Let them die!)
Cut out welfare, get rid of the police department, why do we need a fire department–my house isn’t on fire! You people just reek with the milk of human kindness. Of course you feel kind toward the insurance companies who charge an arm and a leg for health insurance & then don’t always deliver but…and the pharmaceutical companies that make all those great medicines–they need billions for their research, they say…and what if doctors overcharge–$100 for 5 minutes. Hey, they went to school for 8 years! They’ve got me on 10 different meds keeping me alive (or killing me with side effects)…
I’m Grandma. I was ready for a wheelchair & in constant pain so much so that I couldn’t even sleep on a soft mattress & a foam egg crate. I had the hip operation on Medicare–didn’t have to sell my home, thank God. And MY children are glad for the few socialistic programs the USA has–and especially glad that I’m now walking and enjoying being pain-free–and they don’t have to take me in. We’ve had socialism since FDR. WPA, CCC, welfare, Social Security, Medicare, Farm Subsidies…the bankers sure loved it when government bailed them out with taxpayers’ money (and borrowed trillions), so did the auto industry. The #1 cause of bankruptancy in the USA is medical expenses resulting from a serious illness. Maybe a few of you will be lucky enough to experience that some day. After all, the Constitution says we must always be cut-throat capitalists. Oh! It doesn’t? Well, crumbs!
