Wordless Wednesday: Lieberman Rocks the RNC

Wednesday September 3, 2008
Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman rallies the crowd for John McCain at the Republican National Convention on Sept. 2, 2008

In any other year, Joe Lieberman would have been turned away at the door and then busted for trespassing.

This year, however, things are different. These are different times, and John McCain is clearly a different kind of Republican. Just last week, he rocked the world by choosing ultra-conservative Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running-mate, and less than a week later, he has left-leaning Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman rocking the Republican National Convention for him -- and drawing raucus, wide-eyed jubilation from conservative crowds.

"If John McCain is just another Republican, then I'm Michael Moore's favorite Democrat!"

Lieberman was by far the most anticipated speaker Tuesday night, and he didn't disappoint, taking Democratic nominee Barack Obama to task for his record of partisanship and lauding McCain for his record of reaching across the aisle. It was a magnificent moment in American politics and one history will remember well.

What I find interesting about all this is how the two parties react to their dissidents. I remember how the Democrats were cheering about an incident a few months ago when Barack Obama took Lieberman to the side and essentially harassed him for criticizing him in the Senate.

I was sickened by the whole thing. For all their talk of “diversity” and “tolerance”, liberals have no tolerance for intellectual diversity whatsoever. I’m sure John McCain isn’t happy with some of the things that Republican Chuck Hagel (a rumored running mate for Obama) has said this year, but do you see him backing Hagel into a corner? Of course not.
