Wordless Wednesday: Gay Rights Issues & the Next President

Wednesday August 13, 2008
Gay Marriage Protesters picket outside the first legal gay marriage ceremony in California

Anti-gay religious protesters picket near a gay pride flag at the ceremony of a lesbian couple who were married in the first legally recognized same-sex marriage on June 16, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California. Voters in California will have the opportunity to reinstate the ban on gay marriage by way of a publicly-initiated referrendum question that will appear on the state's Nov. 4, 2008 election ballots.

The issue of gay marriage is likely to make its way to the Oval Office during the next president's administration, along with legislation designed to overturn the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which was implemented during President Bill Clinton's administration. Barack Obama has expressed his desire to allow homosexual men and women to serve openly in the military, while McCain maintains the current policy is an overwhelming success, based on discussions he's had with top military leaders.
