Draft Sarah Palin!

Tuesday June 10, 2008
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

OK, I'll admit it. I'm a convert.

Three weeks ago, I had no idea who Sarah Palin was or what she was about.

Then, I started researching running-mate possibilities for presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain, and noticed a grassroots effort to get the Alaska governor on the ballot. Her name seemed to be everywhere, and I started to wonder if it was a horrible trick, dreamed up by some lovestruck, basement-dwelling teenager with raging hormones and a vivid imagination.

The more I learned, the more I was amazed by this spitfire from the tundra. I checked with a friend who works on The Hill in DC, and sure enough, she was everything the Internet machine said she was and then some. My friend called Palin the GOP's "secret weapon," and said she's got the presence, the substance and the panache to change the election for McCain ... if only he'd consider her.

"Look her up," my friend told me. "You won't believe it. Call me when you do."

McCain/Palin 2008 So, two weeks ago, I called her office and spoke with her press secretary, Sharon Leighow, who downplayed the "Draft Sarah Palin" campaign, saying the good governor has a "full plate" right now and, although she is flattered and humbled by all the attention, "Sen. McCain's campaign has not contacted our office."

As deflating as this news would appear to be to the Palinites of the world (and, indeed, she does seem to have a global appeal), I later discovered that one of the bigger items on her plate was the recent birth of her son Trig, who was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. The newborn is Todd and Sarah Palin's fifth child. Their oldest, Track Palin, recently enlisted in the military.

The Palin family released this statement the morning after Trig Paxson's birth:

“Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed.”
Three days later, Gov. Palin was back at work.

None of this information -- apparently -- is new, but it sure was new to me. Ever since McCain had sewn up the nomination, I had wondered who he would pick as his running-mate. To say I was less-than-thrilled with the field is an understatement. Out of all of the candidates on the slate, I liked the one person who was least likely to get the job: Texas Congressman (and former Libertarian) Ron Paul.

With apologies to Congressman Paul (for whom I still bear a very deep admiration), I have changed my mind -- for all the right reasons:
  • Palin showed a commitment to her pro-life conservative principles by not bowing to the pressure to abort her mentally-challenged child. Rarely are one's convictions borne out by real-life circumstances, but Palin showed she's willing to live her beliefs.
  • With a son in the military, Palin will be keenly aware of how her military decisions or the decisions she influences as vice-president will affect the men and women serving in the armed forces. With a son in the military, Palin and her family will have to grit their teeth along with other military families, as their loved-ones carry out the orders associated with those difficult decisions.
  • At 44, Palin would offer a refreshing balance to the McCain ticket and nullify any advantage Obama would have with his youth. Plus, if Obama decides to bring in Hillary Clinton as his running-mate, Palin would effectively neutralize the female factor. Furthermore, Palin has a likeable style and toughness that neither Hillary nor Obama can match.
  • Finally, Palin has earned a staggering 90-percent approval rating from her constituents, not the easiest people to please, I would imagine. Her committment to her principles and her willingness to follow through on promises makes her the toast of Alaska and, for now, the darling of the GOP.
Although I'm reluctant to predict what McCain will do, I know what he should do. I can unequivocally say that by putting Sarah Palin on the GOP presidential ticket, Johnny Mac would put the Democrats in check-mate and give US conservatives and every other American a reason to hope.

Palin sounds great, but if McCain chooses her as his running mate, he can no longer legitimately criticize Obama on his age or percieved lack of experience.

Palin’s got more actual experience, qualifications and accomplishment than Obama times 2.

I say, if the Dems want to question Palin’s experience, bring em on!!!

(And by the way, the media was touting Florida Gov Charlie Crist as a top Veep contender, and he’s been governor for a shorter time than Palin AND Palin has done some real gutsy things — is there a double standard here for females???)

If she can’t be VP this time, let’s make her president next round. The Dems are gonna have trouble coming up with another female presidential nominee, but I think we have an excellent opportunity in Sarah. McCain-Palin ‘08… or… Palin-Huckabee 2012!!!

A commenter on another post says it much better than I can:

“They say McCain reads the blogs, so here goes —

Senator McCain- Don’t let the campaign kibbitzers muddle things up.

First and foremost, Sarah Palin shares your values. She killed the bridge to nowhere. Need we say more?

As for the politics, Sarah Palin transcends geography. Her constituency, like yours, goes beyond state lines.

She will get your ticket access to voters all over the country based on who she is and what she stands for. Because she’s young, a woman, a mother with young kids, she will grab media attention more than any other potential candidate.

Gov. Palin also has a son in the active duty military. You have very wisely taken your son’s service in Iraq off the table as a campaign talking point. That is and should be respected. But others can talk about it and reflect on what it means.

A McCain-Palin administration would be the first in memory which has family members in uniform during wartime from both the President and Vice President. That would be a powerful statement as to the importance of national service, especially in uniform.

Most importantly, any Vice President should be ready to step up and serve in the event she is needed. Frankly, who is really ever ready? Gov. Palin is as ready as anybody, she is a quick learner, and in her public career has exhibited the courage and decisiveness needed for a great leader.

Godspeed to you in your campaign and in making this important decision.”

John McCain, for the love of all that’s Conservative, please pick Alaska governor Sarah Palin as your running mate. She is young, dynamic, hard-nosed, pro-life, pro-drilling, and is hugely popular in her home state because of her policies and her ability to deal with legislators on both sides of the aisle. She would absolutely appeal to a significant portion of disgruntled Hillary supporters. Long-term, this would help dispel the notion that the Republican party is only made up of old white men. She is every bit an up-and-comer as Bobby Jindahl. As I see it, these two could be party leaders for decades. Let’s take that first step this Friday when McCain makes his announcement that she’s his VP candidate!

McCain \ Palin 2008

Oil for energy, oil for national security, oil for the economy.

This issue is what is going to win the election!

Sarah demonstrates morals and family values… everything else is a perfect fit to win this election… the Democrats know it and I they fear this ticket more than anything… they are hoping that McCain picks Romney or the like so they can do character attacks the way Obama supporters handled Hillary during their Primary. I don’t think there is a woman in either party that is going to stand for Obama supporters dragging another bright woman through the gutter.

(24) Dave says:

Biden won’t create 1/100th of the buzz that Palin will with this nomination. Palin can rally the GOP core with her pro-life, fiscal conservative views. She’ll pick up some female votes that McCain couldn’t have touched. And she gets the GOP ticket away from looking like ‘old white men in suits’.

Biden adds nothing compared to Palin. What a huge move for McCain. For the first time this election season, the GOP has something to be excited about.

Well you got your pick in Palin. At first it disturbed me but then I started thinking. She can’t really be attacked for lack of experience without the left sounding hypocritical for Obama’s lack of experience. She neutralizes the historic aspect of Obama being a black candidate for office by bringing in her own historic aspect in being a woman. At the same time she helps bring in the female vote to McCain and perhaps even some of the Hillary vote still hurt by Obamaphiles.

That said, I don’t know how she is on the issues. I was trying to look it up when I came across this blog.

A President and Vice President who speak their convictions from a context of experience!

Ingenious beyond the context of this election, a substantial action resonating with all people who recognize and value individual choice! A true opportunity for innovation, firmly rooted in heritage, a shift from the dictatorship of ersatz and image! A political and cultural renaissance!

People throughout world will recognize and remember the American Frontier, the America that sustained them under the drab and oppressive boot of collectivisation, a Frontier of the individual mind and spirit!

Bravo to Senator and Mrs. McCain, to Governor Palin and Mr. Paxson, their trusted circles transcending party lines, and…….the GOP!

- a woman who has been involved in athletics, music, education and all of the other areas that we wnat equality for other women
And a whole host of other skills and abilities that represent the best of any candidate either male or female.

(46) Frustrated says:

For all you who agrees on picking this person for vp, I suppose it’s safe to say that you all agree on using the death penalty and getting rid of abortion? Because that’s exactly what this woman wants.

I’m a woman too so this isn’t a sexist issue. I don’t want this woman up in the white house because she’s too extreme on those two issues with too little political and law experience.

Who says people have the right to take away other people’s lives? I say go for the life sentence if need be, not the death penalty. How can you be pro-life but be willing to use the death penalty to end a life?

And as for abortion, what about women in poor circumstances? What about the raped victims that were impregnated? Do you think she would let them get the abortion before that fetus turns into a baby with a live heart beat?

I bet you she’d say “God gave you a gift. Be a good mom now and take care of it.” She’s not going to care about the victim and her ill-begotten child. There’s such a good chance that the victim will feel resentment towards a child that came from such a terrible crime.

This woman needs to organize herself and figure out what’s right. She is NOT the next vice president. She will NEVER be.

I am not an Obama supporter, but since she’s on the Republican ticket now…I might as well vote for Obama just to make sure Palin doesn’t get a chance to get in the vp office.

He talks a good story and accomplished nothing much in the State Senate or the US Senate but she “threw the bums out” in Alaska AND those “bums” were in her own party.

It’s about time … maybe we actually do have a chance to take this country back.

What an ignorant, sexist comment. Yes–duh–bearing 5 children would qualify as EXPERIENCING something YOU never have, and neither have Biden, Obama or McCain, for that matter. But more importantly, she also has EXECUTIVE experience as a LEADER that Obama and Biden DON’T POSSESS. #34 - What “great work” has Obama done again? I’m confused on that.

#46 - Being poor doesn’t excuse killing your child, unless you agree that it’s okay for poor women to throw their babies in dumpsters after birth? And pregnancy from rape is a miniscule percentage of abortions, despite the left’s hyperbole.

Abortion: death of the innocent
Death Penalty: death of the guilty

Also, did you know a baby’s heart begins to beat about a WEEK after a woman misses her period? Yes, one week - 3 weeks after ovulation - heartbeat. It doesn’t start to beat only after the trip through the birth canal.

This choice has made me more inclined to vote Republican rather than write in Ron Paul like I was thinking about doing.

Clueless? Or Another Road To Nowhere?

A month previously, Palin had said:
“As for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?” Palin offhandely asked CNBC Anchor Larry Kudlow in July.
After she was announced as McCain’s presumptive running mate, she stated that she does not believe that climate change is man-made. Yuppers, Palin knows the energy crisis well, even if her claim on “Charlie Rose” that Alaska’s untapped resources can significantly ease it is unsupported by the facts.
Palin initially expressed support for the Gravina Island Bridge project, commonly known outside the state as the “Bridge to Nowhere.” However, once it had become a nationwide symbol of wasteful earmark spending and federal funding was lost, Palin decided against filling the $320 million gap with state money.
I can’t wait for the debates!

There is no comparison in resumes with Barack Obama and Sarah Palin. First, anyone who is stupid to think that his middle name being Hussein means anything is an idiot.
Barack is a graduate of a Harvard Law and was in the top 5% of his class. Sarah is a journalism major from the U. of Idaho. Analogy for the “Hussein guy”. If you played quarterback for USC, you might reasonably have the ability to quarterback an NFL team. If you played wingback for your pop warner team, you may be able to be an NFL quarterback but you haven’t shown it. Obama ran and won an election for senator of a large state then ran an 18 month campaign for the nomination going up against the Clinton machine and a massive initial financial disadvantage. And he won. He has attracted respected and experienced people from across the isle. Chuck Hagel, Colin Powell to name a few.
She lost a race for lt. governor then won the governorship in a very small state. Again, maybe she is talented but she hasn’t done much yet. The few interviews I have seen have not shown her to be a deep thinker nor terribly intellectual. We had our folkly guy with limited experiences and that didn’t work out so well.
I think she seems very likeable and maybe she has a future in politics but this is for VPOTUS and her running mate is 72 and has had recurrent melanoma. This is the worst candidate for VP since Quayle.

It may seem like a good idea, but it will come back to haunt McCain.

Its obvious that she was chosen to grab some of those Clinton supporters, but she is no Hillary. I think it will offend most Hil-supporters thinking that their candidate is interchangeable on the simple fact she is female. She also does not even stand for any of the same issues as Hillary.

okeedokee’s breakdown on experience is misleading.

Palin was a mayor to a small town of 7,000 and she governs a state that has population of less than 600,000 and a pop density of less than 1 per square mile.

Obama was a state legislator for seven years in the fifth most populated state of almost 13,000,000… working mostly in Chicago which is third most populated state at 3,000,000.

If he wanted Hillary, he should have asked her. Wait… she said “No Way, No How, No McCain.”

Has Sarah Palin ever visited a foreign country? She started popping out kids right after she married her high school sweetheart so I’m guessing she hasn’t had the opportuniy to see much of the world outside the U.S. She has served as the mayor of a town of 5000 where she still lives. I guess that makes her worthy of governing a nation of 300 million. McCain just committed political suicide.

Bigquestionmark,

Yes, Palin has been to Iraq and Kuwait as many times as Obama has, actually, and she’s worked with Russia on trade issues. Do we not forget how geographically close Alaska is to Russia??? Get out your maps, people.

As a woman and mother, I am offended by the flip “popping out” babies remark. No wonder Hillary got overlooked by the hypocritical Dem’s who claim to support the advances of women…..in the last 24 hours, the truly sexist left wing bloggers have certainly been coming out of the woodwork. What a disgrace to your party and its supposed principles.

Ever stop to think that the democratic-elected Congress 3 years ago might have something to do with where the economy’s gone as of late? I think Pelosi’s dismal book sales speak to HER approval rating and ineffectiveness.

I would like everyone to stop and think. I hope all are capable before one speaks with foot in mouth. Our forefather’s gave us the most precious of all gifts. If you don’t believe than go home to your ancestors country. Do your research on all four candidates fairly. Don’t be selfish on your needs but the needs of the country. Do you want what our forefathers fought for? If so, that is what “we the people” stands for, FREEDOM!! This whole board is nothing but slamming candidates with narrow minds. We are now on the down slide. Take this country back. Let our next generations enjoy what we have/had in the 60, 70, 80, 90, and 2000’s.

At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in the year 1787, Alexander Tyler (a Scottish history professor at The University of Edinburgh) had this to say about “The Fall of The Athenian Republic” some 2,000 years prior. “A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.” “The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
> > From bondage to spiritual faith;
> > From spiritual faith to great courage;
> > From courage to liberty;
> > From liberty to abundance;
> > From abundance to complacency; (contented)
> > From complacency to apathy; (indifference)
> > From apathy to dependence;
> > From dependence back into bondage.”

McCain Choosing Sarah Palin proves to me that republicans will do anything to win this election, even if it puts the welfare of this country on the line. We finally have a presidental candidate, in Obama, that can get this country back on track. Instead I have to witness another election where the republicans are pulling strings to tap into the evangelical christian vote and gun loving crazies. I understand that religion/Abortion/and personal rights such owning guns are issues that must be addressed at some time. It just makes me sick to my stomach that Republicans will come out to vote for Sarah Palin for the sole reason that she is a member of the NRA or Pro-Life, and completly forget about the real issues that we should be concerned with such as foreign relations, the war, the environment, and our economic future as americans. This is the same reason we are in the current situation with the horrible bush administration. Cant republicans see the trend and realize that we need a new leader in the whitehouse, someone who can lead with passion and hope for positive change.

(76) SoCal via AK says:

Palin is an Alaskan woman and what that means you can never know until you have experienced their thinking style and ability to handle things.

Alaskan women then and now didn’t and don’t have time to think about glass ceilings with or without cracks. They just set about doing what needs doing. If governing a family or a state is on the to do list than an Alaskan woman can do it.

Alaskans live international diplomacy. It is a circum-polar world there involving other countries in ways that the lower 48 simply cannot understand. Diplomacy is a daily and usually informal — not scheduled at some table of acceptable design months or years ahead — most any table will serve but Alaskans appreciate solid and wood.

Palin is a plain-style individual with an undeniable flair.

She enjoys life and its challenges. What a fresh arctic breeze!!! I was interested the the campaigns but expecting a boring time between now and election day with another Capital Hill in-house selection. I wanted a Governor or an intelligent, thinking non-political figure to join the run - to accept that searing race to the White House for me. Palin startled me and then I smiled my Independent smile….. Let’s roll!

Need to run so I can’t do lots of the complementary comments right now, but GREAT CALL. I’ll admit, I got it wrong.

She seems like a very solid person, with great character and capability rather than just credentials. Like McCain, I may not agree with all of his positions, but I get a feeling of a truly honorable person. If she can rise to the occasion by being respectful, coherent and poised, then McCain just won the election.

Something possible important that I don’t want wit for later. Your comment on ‘Blog Swamping’, or whatever it is called, deserves investigation and exposure. On a supportive site where I learned more about Paylin, the comments were unmoderated and flooded by sewer water. There seemed to be two types: the worst were grossly derogatory and were of the Marxist ANSWER or CPA variety agi-prop. The second were more “sophisticated” and had twists on canned political attack points. More of the style of political campaign talking points and rabid supporters.

Do you see a similar pattern? Can you tell where comments originate (whois)? Have you heard similar things from other blogs? Seems organized. I also suspect no laws are being broken (ethics being a different thing) but maybe some type of exposure could highlight this new type of ‘clean’ politics. Tie it back to the Obama campaign?

Congratulations!

I was very pleased that McCain chose Sarah for VP and the more I read about her that is factual, the Better I Like her.
I am not surprised at all the rude and filthy comments I see concerning her by the Obama-maniacs. It has been common knowledge for some time that anyone with guts, integrity and manners, left the Demoratic party long ago ! If Democrats could run a flipping Primary, they would have at least had Hillary to be proud of for a Candidate. But, in their jerking around with the delegates and then the Super-delegates, and then having their double-back, crossover, loophole filled rules and a total idiot (Howard Dean) for those who don’t remember, for a head of the party, You don’t deserve a chance to run a country until you can prove you know what you are doing. Obviously, the Kool-Aid has proven to cause long term brain damage. If not for the Foreign money ( George Soros and those boys who wear the sheets on their heads )and the Liberal Dominated Media, both print and electronic, Obama would still be in south Chicago sucking up to Wiliam Ayers. Obama May not be a Muslim now as far as appearances go, but in his own words, he has told us he will “stand with the muslims” when things get tough. Try not knowing where the money is coming from to pay light bills or to pay for your child to go to the doctor.Try having your child wanting to go on a field trip with his class that costs 20.00 and you know you will go without lunch all next week just so he can go.Or how about buying his clthes from a yard sale in the town right next to yours so people at school won’t know recognize clothes from their yard sales and he gets laughed at.That is working moms! Not just because you have kids and you hold an office. I’m not on welfare and I have raised my son and 2 nieces. To say that she has more experience than Obama is a joke. Wake up people. We all know what the real issue is here. You can build her up all you want but it is what is is. The Truth About Sarah Palin: Dear friends, So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the last 2 days that I decided to write something up . . . Basically, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have only 2 things in common: their gender and their good looks. :) You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts with my name and email address attached, but please do not post it on any websites, as there are too many kooks out there . . . Thanks, Anne ABOUT SARAH PALIN I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city. She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”. It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby. She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym. She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit. Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans. Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters. She’s smart. Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state. In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs. She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them. While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day. Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below). As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated” her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support. She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness. Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her. When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined). As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to. As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”. She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative. Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her. As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum. Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species. McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President. There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she. However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it. CLAIM VS FACT *”Hockey mom”: true for a few years *”PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since *”NRA supporter”: absolutely true *social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional). *pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it. *”Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation *”Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. *political maverick: not at all *gutsy: absolutely! *open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. *has a developed philosophy of public policy: no *”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. *fiscal conservative: not by my definition! *pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. *pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents *pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla’s history. *pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union. WHY AM I WRITING THIS? First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne, last name redacted Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations. Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings. Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life. Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s attempt at censorship. Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable. CAVEATS I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall–they are swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers. You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000″, up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

Oh please! Sarah Palin is shiny and new, and like everything else, she will be inspected until the newness wears off. I have researched this woman, and do NOT LIKE what I read. The republican party has placed this person on the ticket to obviously win the “Hillary” vote. We are not so stupid to vote based on gender. Sarah Palin did nothing in her speech but degrade and belittle, and she did NOT speak one sentence about health care, education, or the economy. Her pit bull mentality is exactly what got our country into the mess it is in now. She is as right winged as they come. The strides we have made in this country for equality for EVERYONE regardless of race, sex, religion, creed etc will crumble if the McCain/Palin ticket succeeds. We need to move away from the bashing and belittling and move forward to the future and the issues at hand. No matter who becomes the next president/vice president, I hope Americans will remember that these people work for US, and we have the power to decide what they do. Its time to take personal responsibility for our actions and not leave so much up to Washington. Obviously they are not doing a good job right now. When everything is said and done, and the sun sets, we are all human beings. We all are the same. Its just sad that many people out there don’t seem to see that. We all require the same basic necessities in life. We will be in serious trouble if Sarah Palin ever sits in the Oval Office, and given how old John McCain is, that quite truly may be a possibility.

Hmm…Obama graduated Columbia University, Harvard law and was a law professor at University of Chicago before becoming one of the most influential senators in US history, while Palin went to Hawaii Pacific College, transferred to North Idaho state, then transferred to Univ of Idaho before finally earning her undergraduate degree. Other accomplishments? Beauty pageant circuit winner and PTA mom. So why was SHE mocking OBAMA?!! It should be the other way around, but he is too dignified to stoop to her level. And to hold her disabled baby up for the sake of votes while claiming her daughter is off limits for discussion? You can’t have it both ways. Apparently getting elected to governor in the State of Alaska is equivalent to being elected president to the student council in high school. You really don’t need to know anything, have cute sayings that don’t offend too many people; “What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lip Stick!”, and have the prettiest smile. The article below was taken from Think Progress by Satyam on 9/8/08 filed under economy.

Palin’s first gaffe: Claims Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac are taxpayer-funded.»
Speaking in Colorado this weekend, Gov. Sarah Palin tried to explain the recent federal bailout by claiming that lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.” The companies, however, “aren’t taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization,” McClatchy noted. Palin’s satement “is somewhat nonsensical because up until yesterday there was sort of no public funding there,” said Andrew Jakobovics of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “The ‘too expensive to tax payers,’ I don’t know where that comes from.”

Digg It!

I think I will move to Alaska, I really enjoyed the high school experience. They question why the federal government is so involved in their affairs.

Teen pregnancy has been happening for years and now all the sudden since a vice presidential candidate has a teenager in the spotlight and the media has taken it to extreme. You ridiculous people want to criticize her for not taking care of her children. They are a typical family and EVERY family has issues. Let’s not make this bigger than it is.
I am a mother of 5 have daycare in my home and go to school FULL-TIME!! I don’t have time to be with my teenager all the time. We just trust that they will make good decisions. LEAVE THE THE DAUGHTER ALONE!!! Leave the family alone!!

A pregnant daughter…Do you know about Obama’s family? Are you against Palin because she seems to be in touch with how the res of us live. She lives it, not just reads about it. Are you one of the ones looking for more give aways. I work, I pay my bills. If you listened to the debate Obama said nothing about cutting spending for the already overtaxed AMERICAN, but add more programs. All of these big banks need to suck it up. Their fall is because they were not managed properly, not Bush or Clinton or others. I will vote Palin, and not for what she has or has not done, but she has proved she has judgement and is able to think past a lot of issues. She can heal the gap, I feel she can cross lines too. I don’t feel we should do the bailout, and if you look, most of the ones that didn’t vote it, feel they will not get back in. From my standpoint, politics as they have been for years (not just Bush) needs to change. Obama is not for change, listen to the words of the debate, more over, listen to what he didn’t say.Mr. McCain, I respect you as I do anyone else that even thinks about taking this on, including Obama (I do not agree with the fact the he does not support the USA, pledge, he thinks we have 59 states, did some one say Harvard? Sarah Palin,I vote you. I am a white male from Mississippi. I can cross the black white issue and I can cross the female issue. Sarah Palin is a real person, not a puppet, and she has logic. Look at Washington, look at the big banks. A little logic would go a long way in both places. Thank You all, and I say two thumbs up for Palin / McCain.

I wanted to point out to the person who wrote this that Obama DOES support the USA, DOES say the pledge of allegiance, and you can be damn sure that anyone who attends Harvard knows very well how many states there are. You obviously DO NOT have any respect at all for Sen Obama to repeat these smears and ignore the fact that Obama’s tax plan WILL cut taxes for 95% of Americans, while McCain has made no such promises other than continued tax breaks for the incredibly wealthy. In a world exclusive The NATIONAL ENQUIRER names GOP VP Candidate Sarah Palin’s secret lover!

No less than three members of the man’s family including one by sworn affidavit have claimed that Sarah Palin engaged in an extramarital affair with husband Todd’s former business partner, Brad Hanson.

These sources have named Hanson as Palin’s secret love, and say their affair nearly wrecked both their marriages.

Hanson owned a snowmobile dealership with Palin’s husband Todd, who immediately dissolved the partnership after he heard stories about the affair, which occurred around 1996, according to the sources. At the time, Palin was mayor of Wasilla.

Palin has vehemently denied cheating on her husband, and Hanson insisted to The NATIONAL ENQUIRER that he was never romantically involved with the 44-year-old Republican vice presidential candidate

The left in this country does more personal attacking and name calling than ever before. They do not talk experience or policy because they have none. We are all Americans and all human let us debate the issues and talk about our own policies and plans not the others. We all need to wake up and listen to people directly and make our own decisions. Sarah Palain and John McCain are the best hope we have to turn this country around. John McCain has the experience of office and knowledge of military to be one of the best presidents we will ever have. Sarah Palin is educated, experienced, courageous, a fighter for reform in government, conservative and is an excellant choice for VP.

Our elected officials cannot be chosen for us by the self-rightous media or the vulgar, often uneducated people of Hollywood.

This country, until GB, has always fared better under the leadership of the Republican Party. The Democrats are control freaks and power mad. Taxes HAVE ALWAYS been increased under Democratic rule and we as a society have not done as well. The Democratic Party is leaning toward Socialism. Our choices will be greatly limited under their control. The motto of the Democratic Party is ‘tax and spend’. We have too many people now who believe disability is an excellant career choice. The Democrats will help people choose this route.
