Barack Obama, left, and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright

In this week's "Friday's Guest" column, About.com Guest Commentator Jack Kerwick takes a look at Joe Klein's Time magazine article "Exit Wright.", and analyzes the efforts under way by the political left to reform its image.

Joe Klein As always, Kerwick brings a new depth to a story that hasn't quite faded. With reports of another pastor -- this time a white one -- complicating Obama's camapign, Kerwick's column has just as much relevance today as it did when Klein published his initial April 30 article.

From the article:

Although he never specifies with any degree of exactness what he means by “liberal self-laceration” or “liberal masochism,” it is reasonably clear that Klein refers to the characteristically liberal disposition to show excessive sympathy for the United States’ most unabashed critics -- no matter how outrageous and unjustified their charges. This is why it has often been described by its opponents as “anti-American.”

I can’t say that I ever completely agree with Kerwick, but he has a fine mind, a keen eye for sharp distinctions that bring home his key points, and his prose is a pleasure to read. In a world of ill-educated screaming conservative commentators who see themselves as entertainers rather than journalists (e.g. Rush Limbaugh), I look forward to Fridays and to Kerwick’s weekly column, which is in the best tradition of old-school conservatives. He is the dictionary definition of ‘polite political discourse.’ Thanks Justin!
